Electric car charging network operator SIA Ignitis Latvija has agreed on the construction of electric car charging stations with Rimi Latvia. Continuing to develop the fastest charging network for electric cars, a total of 2025 charging points will be built and handed over to customers in 12 Latvian cities during 66.

The largest stations with the possibility to simultaneously charge 6 cars will be located in Ogre, Jelgava, Valmiera and Liepāja, as well as in Riga, where 10 charging points will be available. All charging points will be equipped with both European standard CCS2 and Asian standard CHAdeMO connectors, allowing to service a wide range of electric car models.

To make the daily experience of electric car users comfortable, we are rapidly expanding the charging network with modern high-capacity charging points. It is important for us to place the new charging points in places that fit comfortably into people's daily rhythm. Therefore, cooperation with Rimi, which is one of the most popular supermarket chains in Latvia, was a step that allows us to move towards the goal of creating the most powerful network coverage of electric car charging stations in the entire Baltic region.

Arturs Svekris, Ignitis ON electric car charging network development manager in Latvia

To meet the growing demand for fast charging, 54 of the charging points will have ultra-fast direct current (DC) power, starting from 200kW up to 400kW. At these stations, the latest and most modern electric car models will charge from 20% to 80% of a charged battery within 15-20 minutes. On the other hand, 12 charging points will provide slow alternating current (AC) charging with a power of up to 22kW, which allows the electric car to be charged from a completely empty to a full battery within four to five hours. These points will be suitable for customers who plan to spend a longer time in or around the supermarket and want to charge their electric car at lower energy costs.

The ever-increasing number of electric car owners in Latvia is a logical prerequisite, so that in people's fast daily rhythm, the use of electric car charging points while shopping is another option that can make Rimi's customer's everyday life more convenient and simpler, alongside solutions such as self-service scanners, mobile application, Rimi e-store etc. Therefore, after successful pilot projects, for example near Rimi Piņkis, we have decided to expand the network of electric car charging stations in 12 cities throughout Latvia with a total of 66 charging points.

Rimi Latvia real estate and development director Māris Gailīts

There are currently almost 75 Ignitis ON charging points available throughout Latvia, located both in Riga and in the regions. It has already been reported that "Ignitis Group" will invest more than 115 million euros in the creation of a fast charging network for electric cars in the Baltics within three to five years. The company's goal is to create the widest fast electric charging highway connecting the Baltic States with Poland and the Scandinavian region. Most of the charging points will be high-power charging points, starting at 150 kW.
